Rainy Day Survival Guide: 15 Ways to Entertain Kids Indoors Without Losing Your Mind

Stuck inside with the kids on a rainy day? Here's your ultimate sanity-saving guide to 15 fun, simple indoor activities using stuff you already have at home.

When it’s pouring outside and the kids are climbing the walls…
--------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the New Zealand parenting rite of passage: surviving a rainy day with your sanity (mostly) intact. Whether it’s school holidays, a sudden downpour, or just a classic grey Wellington weekend, this guide’s for you.

We’ve rounded up 15 easy, low-prep indoor activities that’ll keep the kids busy *and* buy you a few moments of peace.

1. Build a Blanket Fort
-----------------------

The OG rainy day activity. Grab couch cushions, bed sheets, pegs and torches. Bonus points for turning it into a reading nook or movie den.

2. DIY Obstacle Course
----------------------

Set up a “don’t touch the floor” challenge using pillows, chairs, and blankets. Time them. Compete. Burn energy.

3. Make a Movie (on Your Phone)
-------------------------------

Let them create their own film. Script, costumes, props - the works. It doesn’t have to be Oscar-worthy. It just has to keep them occupied.

4. Baking Showdown
------------------

Get them in the kitchen for cupcakes, cookies or DIY pizzas. Messy? Yes. Entertaining? Absolutely. Tip: Get older kids to judge the creations.

5. Toy Wash Station
-------------------

Chuck some toys in a tub, add dish soap, sponges, and a towel. Toddlers will play for ages. Bonus: clean toys.

6. Scavenger Hunt Indoors
-------------------------

Hide clues around the house and let them solve the mystery. Tailor it to their age - rhyming riddles for older kids, simple photo clues for littlies.

7. Cardboard Creations
----------------------

Got a delivery box? It’s now a robot suit, spaceship, or dollhouse. Let their imagination do the heavy lifting.

8. “Restaurant” Role Play
-------------------------

Set the table, write a menu, take orders. Let the kids be waitstaff or chefs. Don’t be surprised if your coffee order takes 45 minutes.

9. Dance Party or Silent Disco
------------------------------

Crank the music and get moving or if you’ve got noise-sensitive family members, give everyone headphones and boogie silently.

10. Puzzle or LEGO Challenge
----------------------------

Set a timer and give them a building prompt: “build a zoo” or “create a vehicle that can fly and swim.”

11. Art Attack
--------------

Set up a mini art station with paper, old magazines, glue, and crayons. No glitter. Never glitter.

12. Sock Puppet Theatre
-----------------------

Raid the odd sock drawer and bring characters to life. Even better -build a “stage” from a cardboard box and let them perform a show.

13. Indoor “Camping”
--------------------

Sleeping bags, flashlights, marshmallows in the microwave, ghost stories. You don’t need the great outdoors to go on an adventure.

14. Mindfulness or Yoga for Kids
--------------------------------

There are great free YouTube videos (like *Cosmic Kids Yoga*) that guide kids through stretches, breathing, and calming stories.

15. Time Capsule Project
------------------------

Have the kids collect drawings, photos, or little toys that represent *right now*. Seal it in a box to open in a year (or 10).

Pro tip: Rotate activities
--------------------------

Don’t throw everything at them at once. Space them out across the day, and stash a couple ideas for the next rainy day surprise.

Need to get out of the house anyway?
------------------------------------

Even in bad weather, some local libraries and indoor play centres have free or low-cost activities. Check your local council’s website for holiday programmes too.

Rainy days don’t have to mean cabin fever. With a few creative tricks and a bit of prep, you might just turn a grey day into a great one.
