Morning Chaos Survival Guide: How to Get Kids Out the Door (Almost) on Time
===========================================================================

By Mark Hudson · 22 October, 2025

Mornings with kids can feel like an Olympic sport, with cereal flying, socks missing, and someone always forgetting their bag. Here’s how to survive the chaos, keep your sanity, and maybe even get out the door on time.

The morning mayhem we all know too well
---------------------------------------

If your mornings feel like a combination of *Mission Impossible* and a breakfast-themed obstacle course, you’re not alone. Between finding shoes, packing lunches, and convincing a small human that pyjamas aren’t school uniform, most parents are exhausted before 8am.

Creating a calm, consistent morning routine for kids isn’t about perfection; it’s about survival (and keeping coffee levels high).

1. Prep like a pro the night before
-----------------------------------

Future you will thank present you for spending ten minutes prepping the night before.

- Lay out clothes, shoes, and school bags
- Pre-pack lunches and fill drink bottles
- Check the weather so you’re not hunting for raincoats in a panic

A little organisation can turn the morning rush into something that almost resembles control.

2. Build a simple, predictable routine
--------------------------------------

Kids thrive on predictability. A visual chart on the fridge or hallway wall can make a world of difference. Keep it simple with steps like:

1. Get dressed
2. Eat breakfast
3. Brush teeth
4. Pack bag
5. Shoes on, ready to go

Visual cues help younger kids stay on track without endless reminders or bribes.

3. Turn it into a game
----------------------

If your child moves slower than a snail on a Sunday, try turning the routine into a race. Set a timer or use a fun “beat the buzzer” playlist.

You can even assign points for tasks and offer small rewards at the end of the week, such as stickers, extra bedtime stories, or choosing what’s for dinner.

4. Keep breakfast simple (but appealing)
----------------------------------------

No one needs gourmet granola at 7am. Stick to quick, healthy options that kids will actually eat like overnight oats, smoothies, or toast with nut butter.

Pro tip: let kids choose between two breakfast options. Giving them a sense of control often avoids early-morning stand-offs

5. Leave buffer time and breathe
--------------------------------

No matter how organised you are, someone will need a last-minute toilet stop or remember they have swimming. Aim to be ready ten minutes earlier than you need to be.

That buffer gives you time to breathe, or at least drink your coffee while it’s still warm.

6. Share the load (yes, really)
-------------------------------

If mornings regularly end with someone crying (and it’s usually you), it might be time to call in help.

Whether it’s a morning nanny, a mother’s helper, or after-school care, having an extra pair of hands can make a huge difference.

Platforms like [Caresies](https://caresies.co.nz/)make it easy to find a local nanny who can work the hours you need.

7. Let go of the little things
------------------------------

Some mornings will still be chaos, and that’s okay. If the kids show up with mismatched socks or bed hair, they’ll survive and so will you. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s progress.

So next time you make it out the door (roughly on time), give yourself a gold medal. You’ve earned it.
