How Much Does a Night Nanny Cost in New Zealand?
================================================

By Mark Hudson · 08 May, 2026

Sleep deprivation and newborn life often go hand in hand, which is why more Kiwi families are turning to night nannies for extra support. But how much does a night nanny cost in New Zealand in 2026? Here’s what parents should know about overnight nanny rates, what impacts pricing, and how payroll and employment obligations work.

The newborn weeks are something else. Between the cluster feeds, the settling, the recovery from birth and the general fog, sleep starts to feel like a luxury you used to take for granted. It's no surprise that more Kiwi families are looking into night nannies, and the first question is almost always the same: what does it actually cost?

Here's a straight answer, plus what's behind the price.

The Short Version
-----------------

Most night nannies in New Zealand charge somewhere between **$35 and $60+ per hour**, which works out to roughly **$280 to $600 per overnight shift** depending on the length and the nanny's experience.

That's a wide range, and where you land in it comes down to a handful of things: how experienced the nanny is, where you live, how many babies are involved, how much active care is needed during the night, and whether the nanny stays awake the whole shift or is able to rest between feeds. Auckland and Wellington tend to sit at the higher end of the band, and specialist newborn nurses or maternity nurses can charge well above it.

If you are interested in what a traditional nanny costs in New Zealand, each year we update our nanny pay guide here and you can find a link to that [here](https://paythenanny.nz/articles/nanny-pay-rates).

What You're Actually Paying For
-------------------------------

A night nanny isn't a babysitter. The good ones are seasoned newborn experts, often with backgrounds in midwifery, neonatal nursing, postpartum support or infant sleep consulting. Across a typical shift they might be settling and resettling the baby, doing the overnight feeds (bottle, or supporting breastfeeding), preparing and sterilising bottles, monitoring sleep, changing nappies, and gently coaching you through it if it's your first time round.

Plenty of first-time parents say the most valuable part isn't even the practical help. It's having someone calm and experienced in the house while you finally get five or six hours of unbroken sleep.

Hourly Rate vs Flat Overnight Fee
---------------------------------

There are two common ways night nannies bill in NZ.

The first is an **hourly rate**, which usually applies when the nanny stays awake the whole shift and active care is expected, like with frequent feeds or a baby that wakes often. A typical example: 10pm to 6am at $45 an hour comes in around $360 for the night.

The second is a **flat overnight fee**, more common once the baby is starting to sleep in longer stretches and the nanny has some chance to rest between feeds. A flat $350 to $400 per night is fairly standard for an ongoing arrangement. For an existing nanny working for you, who does the occasional overnight shift, this might be closer to $150 - $200 per night.

Neither is right or wrong. It mostly comes down to how settled the baby is and what kind of support you need.

Why Are They More Expensive Than Day Nannies?
---------------------------------------------

Two reasons, really. Overnight work is harder on the body, and the skill set is more specialised. You're paying for someone who can stay calm at 3am with an unsettled newborn, notice when something isn't quite right, and help shape feeding and sleep routines without being preachy about it. That kind of experience doesn't come cheap, and honestly, you wouldn't want it to.

The Employment Bit Most Families Miss
-------------------------------------

Here's something that catches a lot of first-time employers out: if you're hiring a night nanny directly (rather than through an agency that employs them), you're almost certainly the employer, not the client of a contractor. That means PAYE, KiwiSaver, ACC, holiday pay, a written employment agreement and proper payslips.

The "she's only here a few nights a week" framing doesn't change the legal reality. Inland Revenue and Employment NZ look at the actual working relationship, not the label on it, and a regular night nanny in your home almost always meets the test for employment.

It sounds like a hassle, but in practice it's mostly admin, which is the kind of thing that's much easier when someone else does it for you.

Final Thought
-------------

Night nanny rates in New Zealand in 2026 mostly land between $35 and $60+ an hour, with overnight totals running from around $280 up to $600+ for the more experienced specialists. The right person is worth every cent if it gets you sleeping again, and most families who try it wonder why they didn't book sooner.

If you do go ahead, [Pay The Nanny](https://paythenanny.nz) handles the PAYE, KiwiSaver, holiday pay and IRD side so you can focus on the bit that actually matters, which is sleep.
