Halloween Fun Without the Sugar Crash
-------------------------------------

Halloween in New Zealand is growing every year, with more neighbourhoods joining in the trick-or-treat fun. But while kids love filling their buckets with sweets, most parents dread the sugar highs (and the dentist bills). The good news? You can still enjoy the spooky season without the sugar overload.

These **healthy Halloween treats for kids** are quick, creative and fun for parents, nannies and kids to make together. They’ll look great at any party, and no one will miss the lollies.

1. Apple Monster Mouths
-----------------------

**You’ll need:**

- Apples (cut into wedges)
- Natural peanut butter or almond butter
- Strawberries (sliced thin)
- Sunflower seeds or small marshmallows for teeth

**How to make:**Spread peanut butter on one side of each apple wedge, sandwich two pieces together, and add strawberry slices for tongues. Finish with sunflower seed teeth for a creepy grin.

**Tip:** Swap peanut butter for yoghurt if there are nut allergies.

2. Popcorn Hands
----------------

**You’ll need:**

- Plain air-popped popcorn
- Clear disposable gloves
- Small raisins or chocolate chips (for fingernails)
- Ribbon or string

**How to make:**Drop one raisin into each fingertip before filling the glove with popcorn. Tie it shut with a ribbon, and you’ve got a ghostly popcorn hand that’s perfect for movie night.

3. Mini Pumpkin Muffins
-----------------------

**You’ll need:**

- 1 cup pumpkin purée
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup honey or maple syrup
- 1½ cups wholemeal flour
- 1 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp cinnamon

**How to make:**Mix all ingredients, spoon into mini muffin tins, and bake at 180°C for 15 minutes. The result? Sweet little muffins that are full of flavour and fibre, not refined sugar.

**Bonus idea:** Add chocolate chips shaped like “pumpkin eyes” for a Halloween twist.

4. Banana Ghosts
----------------

**You’ll need:**

- Bananas (halved)
- Yoghurt
- Mini chocolate chips

**How to make:**Dip banana halves in yoghurt and freeze them for 30 minutes. Once chilled, add mini chocolate chips for ghostly eyes and mouths. Serve on popsicle sticks for a spooky snack that’s as healthy as it is cute.

5. Mummy Wraps
--------------

**You’ll need:**

- Wholegrain wraps
- Sliced cheese
- Ham or veggie filling
- Edible eyes (or small pieces of olive)

**How to make:**Cut wraps into strips and layer them around your filled wrap like bandages. Add “eyes” on top and bake until golden. The kids will love unwrapping their lunch.

Making It Fun (and Educational)
-------------------------------

Cooking these treats can be a great learning opportunity. Let kids measure ingredients, mix batters, and help decorate. It builds basic kitchen skills and encourages healthy eating habits. Nannies can also turn it into a themed afternoon activity: put on costumes, decorate the table, and finish with a “best spooky snack” competition.

Trick-or-Treating Without the Tricks
------------------------------------

If you’re going door-to-door, balance things out with healthy dinner options beforehand like homemade pizza, veggie skewers or pumpkin soup. That way, kids fill up on something nourishing before the lolly loot begins.

And if you’re the house handing out treats, consider small toys, glow sticks or stickers instead of sugar. Kiwi parents everywhere will silently thank you.

Keeping the Magic Simple
------------------------

Halloween doesn’t have to mean chaos or cavities. With a few creative swaps, you can give your kids all the excitement without the sugar overload. Whether you’re a parent or a nanny, these healthy Halloween treats for kids make the season fun, festive and fuss-free.
